I know there are a lot better-qualified people to reply, but I'll attempt a couple things.

If you aren't aware, the America is still a very-much intact shipwreck lying submerged at the entrance to Rock Harbor in Isle Royale. Its bow is only a couple feet deep, while its stern is over 100'. When it ran aground in 1928, it was above water, but eventually slid down a slope. It has been so popular a site with divers, that volunteers have had to do repair work to keep it intact. It is protected as part of the National Park.

There is much information out there about it. Check Yahoo under Isle Royle shipwrecks." A recommended book is "Isle Royale Shipwrecks" by Frederick Stonehouse through Avery Color Studios.
