: Here's where it gets a little dicey. Isn't it illegal to photograph "human remains" on Great Lakes shipwrecks? But without photos, or removing the bones, which may be illegal even if not human, how would we know? Hypothetically.

It is illegal to photograph human remains for public display. It is not illegal to photograph human remains for scientific purposes. As long as you confine the distribution of any hypothetical photographs taken to the scientific and law enforcement communities, you probably don't have an issue. This is especially if you get prior approval from such organizations, up front.

: : : I have a "hypothetical" question. Lets say there is a diver diving an obscure, little explored wreck. Under some debris(mast, logs), he(or she) finds what appears to be a very old bone, possibly a hip bone. There is no way to verify it is human, could be anything, including human. Any ideas on how to identify this bone without removing it? Or any authorities that should be notified? Hypothetically of course.

: : I would recommend going back and photographing the item and taking it to appropriate experts for an opinion. This is hypothetical, of course.
