The Door County Maritime Museum & Lighthouse Preservation Society is a cultural and scenic haven on working waterfront complete with world-class maritime displays, ship models and ever-changing calendar of exhibitions and special events. There are three locations that make up the Door County Maritime Museum: museum facilities in Gills Rock and Sturgeon Bay, which includes the tug John Purves; and the 1869 Cana Island Lighthouse.

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum offers visitors a comprehensive look at life on the Great Lakes and along the Detroit River. Located on the shore of historic Belle Isle, the Dossin is a “must see” cultural location for those who love maritime history and enjoy being near the water. A major attraction is the Gothic Room exhibit makes one feel like they are stepping back to a time when Great Lakes luxury passenger steamers like the City of Detroit III took travelers up and down the lakes during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Founded in 1944, the Great Lakes Historical Society has operated the Inland Seas Maritime Museum since 1953 as a key attraction on Ohio's north coast. The museum contains one of the world's largest collections of Great Lakes maritime artifacts, documents, ship models, and original artwork. Its Clarence S. Metcalf Great Lakes Maritime Research Library is highly regarded by researchers and historians, and the Society's quarterly Inland Seas® journal is considered one of the best historical journals throughout the Great Lakes region.

The Historical Collections of the Great Lakes is part of the Center for Archival Collections at Bowling Green State University whose purpose is to collect, preserve, and make available to scholars, students, and the public, historical materials documenting the Great Lakes region and connecting waterways. The Lake Superior Marine Museum Association seeks to preserve the maritime heritage of Lake Superior and the Port of Duluth-Superior by supporting the activities and programs of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center in Duluth, and the Lake Superior Maritime Collection at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Mackinac State Historic Parks is a family of living history museums and nature parks in northern Michigan’s Straits of Mackinac and is an agency within the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment. Located adjacent to the only federally-built dry dock on the Great Lakes, the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes houses the original pumping station and steam engines for the dock which was built in 1891. The museum also has on display a wide ranging collection of marine artifacts and exhibits, and a significant fine art collection. It is also home to the Gordon C. Shaw Study Centre, Audrey Rushbrook Memorial Library, and the museum ship Alexander Henry, a former buoy tender and light icebreaker for the Canadian Coast Guard built in 1959.

Five separate buildings offer a variety of engaging opportunities for the Museum visitor including permanent and changing exhibits on Michigan maritime history, a center for the teaching of boat building and related maritime skills, and a regionally renowned research library. Located in northwestern Lake Huron, Thunder Bay is adjacent to one of the most treacherous stretches of water within the Great Lakes system. Unpredictable weather, murky fog banks, sudden gales, and rocky shoals earned the area the name “Shipwreck Alley.”Today, the 448-square-mile Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary protects one of America's best-preserved and nationally-significant collections of shipwrecks. Fire, ice, collisions, and storms have claimed over 200 vessels in and around Thunder Bay. To date, more than 50 shipwrecks have been discovered within the sanctuary and an additional 30 wrecks have been located outside of the sanctuary boundaries ranging from an 1844 side wheel steamer to a modern 500-foot-long German freighter.

The Lake Superior Maritime Collections Archives (LSMCA) seeks to build a research collection of high quality by identifying, collecting, preserving, and providing access to materials that tell the story of maritime history and activities relating to communities surrounding Lake Superior and the upper Great Lakes. While the focus of the collection is Lake Superior and its environs, the LSMCA also contains unique resources for the study of maritime history on the lower Great Lakes and beyond. These resources are intended to support faculty and student research, as well as the needs of the Lake Superior Marine Visitors Center, and professional and avocational historians.

The Wisconsin Marine Historical Society is one of the most important depositories of Great Lakes historical materials in existence. Affiliated with and housed in the Milwaukee Public Library for over 40 years, the Society has been a premier maritime organization, devoted to discovering, collecting, recording and preserving materials related to Great Lakes maritime history. In addition to publications and programs, the WMHS also maintains a collection of ship information as part of a cooperative effort with the Milwaukee Public Library.

Founded in 1970, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum has grown into one of the largest maritime museums in the Midwest. In addition to commemorating the maritime heritage of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers area and the submarines built there during World War II, the museum is now a leader in preserving the maritime history of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region. With over 60,000 square feet of space, visitors can explore the rich maritime history of Wisconsin through exciting and interactive exhibits. The museum also includes a unique collection of model ships and boats, an operating steam engine, displays of historic vessels and marine engines, and the World War II submarine U.S.S. Cobia.
