: : The actual worst shipwreck was the Eastland, which capsized while at dock in Chicago. I don't remember the year, but 835 lives were lost. The boat was built in Port Huron, MI. But the worst storm to hit the great lakes was the storm of 1913. Check out http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Campus/2712 for a look at the Port Huron Times-Herald articles related to that storm. Good luck

: : : : For sure numbers of shipwrecks lost in a single storm (I think Mr. Bartlett would agree with me here) research the november storm of 1913.
: : : : I forget the exact number of ships, but well over 10 disappeared of the lakes completely, taking
: : : : their entire crews with them. The Regina, Charles S. Price, Leafield, Argus, Hydrus, Wexford, James Carruthers and John A McGean are just a few, and most of these have only been discovered in within the past 10 to 20 years or so. I believe every lake took at least one ship, but Lake Huron took the most in this storm.

: I was wondering on going through your follow - up comments Mr. Tom Daniels, as to the basis on which you rate the Eastland shipwreck of 1913 as the worst one when in terms of lives lost there have been worser ones. For Eg. The Wilhelm Gustloff (a German Ship)which was sunk with a whole lot of civilians in it apart from wounded soldiers by three Russian torpedos resulted in loss of over 7000 lives. Even Titanic has a larger death toll. Maybe when you get to read this one of you may E-Mail some clarifications. Look forward to hearing from you.

As to why the shipwrecks you discussed were not mentioned as follow ups---
I believe the original query was about the great
disaster, in terms of loss of life, on the Great Lakes. It was not a query on the greatest shipping disaster worldwide.

This is why most of the answers discussed the Edmund Fitzgerald, and why someone rightly added the SS EASTLAND.

Speaking of the SS Eastland. My greatgrandfather, Louis Jones, was Captain of the wrecker Favorite which helped out after the SS Eastland capsized in the Chicago Harbor. We have pictures (postcards) of the event.

Louis Jones was also shipwrecked himself on the L.C. Waldo in the Great November 1913 storms on Lake Superior. We have a copy of his brief account of the ship's fate written in later life.
