: The actual worst shipwreck was the Eastland, which capsized while at dock in Chicago. I don't remember the year, but 835 lives were lost. The boat was built in Port Huron, MI. But the worst storm to hit the great lakes was the storm of 1913. Price, Leafield, Argus, Hydrus, Wexford, James Carruthers and John A McGean are just a few, and most of these have only been discovered in within the past 10 to 20 years or so. I believe every lake took at least one ship, but Lake Huron took the most in this storm.

I was wondering on going through your follow - up comments Mr. Tom Daniels, as to the basis on which you rate the Eastland shipwreck of 1913 as the worst one when in terms of lives lost there have been worser ones. For Eg. The Wilhelm Gustloff (a German Ship)which was sunk with a whole lot of civilians in it apart from wounded soldiers by three Russian torpedos resulted in loss of over 7000 lives. Even Titanic has a larger death toll. Maybe when you get to read this one of you may E-Mail some clarifications. Look forward to hearing from you.
