I purchased my first GPS in 1994. Back then everything was in TD’s. The Magellan unit would work with TD’s. If the wreck had a buoy on it you could usually find it on a clear day. For wrecks with out buoys, sometimes you could get lucky and find it with the depth finder. Some days you would search all afternoon and not find anything.

: Hello Brady,

: I did an in-depth write-up on the problem of Loran to GPS conversion which is online at:

: It is non-technical and I'd encourage anyone who dives to read it.

: The short answer to your question is "yes". You can convert Loran to GPS and many GPS units will easily to the conversion. However, in most cases the converted numbers will be useless. (Read my article to see why).

: My advice to anyone is to NEVER perform a mathematical or electronic conversion from Loran to GPS. The numbers it creates are misleading and useless. The only way to get accurate GPS from Loran is to find the site again with a Loran and then take a GPS reading.

: : Is there a way to translate Loran coordinates to GPS?
