The America receives more diver visitation than any other shipwreck at the island. I am familiar with the site. As a stewardess you grandmother would have, for lack of a better description would have ran around the ship a lot. The galley is located aft and below decks. This is where the food was prepared and there is a large stove in place. Slightly forward of this is a system for keeping plates and food warm, by steam heat. Serving food was something a steward have as part of there duties. The dining area had round tables about three feet (?) In diameter, directly above the galley. Some of these are still in place. There were a number of cabins on deck for passengers. The steward might do things like making sure the passengers tickets, making sure they made there way to there accommodations on the vessel. The work was utilitarian in nature and less glamorous jobs like dumping chamber pots may have fallen under grandma's domain. If your really going to do a job on your article contact the park they have the archaeological assessment which is likely the most complete site description.

Best of luck,

: Greetings.
: My grandmother, Ilene Schubert was a stewardess and my uncle Duncan Schubert (then 14 years old) was a cabin boy. They were both on board when the Steamer AMERICA hit a reef on June 7, 1928 off Isle Royal.

: I was looking for anyone with more information on the steamer America. I'm writing a story as told by my grandmother about that night.

: If there is anyone who has more information, I would love to hear. I also would love to hear more about what a Stewardess did on a passenger ship.

: Thanks much
