: : What was the first great lakes submarine wreck, where was it at,history, time it sank, and anything on submarine wrecks.
: The first submarine wreck of which I am aware was the Philips submarine which went down while being tested prior to a salvage attempt on the wreck of the steamer Atlantic.
: There was a discussion of this incident on this list about six months ago.
: I also know of a German WWI U-Boat which was captured and towed around the great lakes on a war bond drive.
: It was sunk in Lake Michigan by the Willamette (sp?) in Naval gunnery practice in the 1920s.
: This is a popular dive site.
: You can find more on the Philips sub at "http://www.alcheminc.com".

The W.W.I submarine was the U-21 I think, it was
a ferociously successfull ship sinker, like the U-505 W.W. II submarine preserved at Chicago.
As a publicity stunt the sub was towed out from Milwaukee to a spot 30 miles into the lake where it was sunk by gunner's mate J.O. Sabin as he used a non~explosive shell to punch a hole into the sub it should be pretty well preserved down
there on the bottom
