I hadn't realized there were so many shipwrecks. And yes, I can see the problem.

The only thing certain is the date of my ancestors death - July of 1853. The day is either the 2nd or the 28th.

: Well we are way out of my area of specialization but I seem to recall that the Mormons have a substantial genealogical data base. You might try there. Unless you can come up with a ships name. There are a number of hudson river boats that went down in lake Erie. You can link to a number of shipwreck dada bases such as the Save Ontario Shipwrecks data base and try cross referencing by date but if we are looking at a shipwreck population of say 35,000 wrecks I think you can see the problem.
