: : I am looking for any information about the ship wreck the Sea Bird. I am looking for the cause of wreck, ship's manifest, cargo, crew list, etc. No detail to small, family ancestor was aboard at the time the Sea Bird sunk. Please also include sources for documentation

: As there were several boats called Sea Bird, I am assuming you are referring to the sidewheel steamer once owned by the Goodrich Steamship Company that caught fire in April 1868 and went down with nearly 100 lost lives off Illinois' North Shore. It and other Goodrich boats are referred to in the out-of-print book "Red Stacks Over the Horizon." A few years ago I assisted the Underwater Archeological Society of Chicago in researching and producing a slide show about the Seabird, which is still a diveable wreck. I could send you my 25 page report if you e-mail me.

The Book, "Red Stacks on the Horizon" has been reprinted and is available through any major bookstore. The wreck of the Sea Bird is very photogenic and an easy shallow dive. There is at least one charter boat - Enterprise Marine - that visits this site regularly.
