Ed,

The Vernon was found by Kent Bellrichard of Milwaukee in 1969. He verified that the cargo
doors were open due to overfilling. There is a
good article about this in a past issue of Inland Seas, the journal of the Great Lakes
Historical Society. The article was actually a letter written by Dick Boyd of the
Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association. It was quite interesting and shed
lot of light on the incident. By a strange coincidence, I was just up at Two Rivers
today looking at artifacts from the Vernon at the Rogers Street Fishing Village
Museum. They have an excellent display which includes most of the artifacts
Bellrichard and other recovered prior to the passage of legislation protecting Great
Lakes wrecks.

: Propeller ship Vernon foundered in gale and went down 6 mi NE of Two Rivers Point WI in late Oct 1887. One survivor. Accusations at the time cargo doors left open. Wreck found 1969. I've been told open cargo doors confirmed.
: Looking for a printed & published account of the 1969 discovery. Or,if none name of organization or firm who made discovery.
: My grandfather (Frank Hall)was 2nd engineer on the Vernon at the time she went down.
