One candidate is the George Morley, a 200 foot wooden steamer that caught fire in 1907 and sank approximately 150 yards off Greenwood Street Beach in 10-15 feet of water in Evanston, Illinois, just north of Chicago. It is well-known to the lifeguards and is even buoyed on occasion, though the shifting sands alternately reveal and cover it. Afterwards, you can walk west to the Evanston Historical Society's Dawes House museum and view one of the propellers on the front lawn or an anchor at the nearby Boat House at Dempster Street.
