Having just stumbled upon your inquiry while doing my own Google search on GLEW, I'm anxious to know whether or not you ever succeeded in coming up with some useful historical background on GLEW. What (if anything) can you pass along? (I grew up a few miles from the GLEW yards, but was quite oblivious to them at the time. Now I live in St. Louis, MO, where laker-watching is hard to come by!)
