Grand Haven - The U.S. Coast Guard's newest cutter, the "Mackinaw," collided with a break-wall this afternoon while making its first visit to Grand Haven.
The Mackinaw was on its way down the Grand Haven Channel when it ran into the south side of the break wall.
The ship is touring ports around Lake Michigan. The $90 million cutter is 240 feet long, and can break lake ice up to ten feet thick.
WZZM 13 Photographer Jon Mills witnessed the crash and says it caused a 10 foot by 10 foot dent in the front of the ship and paint was scraped away.
The new "Mack" will be commissioned in early 2006
