Yes, I am fairly certain we've IDed the wreck of the schooner Contest, built Buffalo 1855. We are fairly confident that we have historical record of all the 100+ ft. vessels lost in the White Lake area and we have VERY few with a beam of over 25 ft. Coupled with the fact that the remains are almost exactly where historical accounts place the Contest, I think we can safely say the wreck is that of the Contest. Her loss was covered fairly well in the Buffalo, Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit papers. The wreck has a lot left and was probably covered for most of the last 120 years. She's a nice addition to White Lake's already impressive maritime history.
