Last weekend the Gallinipper wrecksite was measured and photographed, resulting in a length of 92 ft. She was also measured earlier at 102 ft. This suggests that the wreck is almost certainly that of the Gallinipper. Her register keel length of 95 ft along with her unique, early build support this finding. Diver observations have tended to underestimate this wreck's length at about 70 ft., probably due to the generally low visibility at the site. This caused us to question her being the Gallinipper. Her unique cutwater, ornate figurehead, reverse hatch orientation and windowed stern all suggest a vessel of 1830s construction, which is consistent with the Gallinipper. The wreck is likely the oldest divable wreck on the western Lakes. I would appreciate hearing from others who are planning dives on her or have dived her. Sadly, the zebra mussel encrustation on this wreck as quadrupled in only two years. The before and after photos of this wreck are enough to bring tears to your eyes.
