Just returned from this year's Gales conference at Duluth. A great show, as usual. Highlights this year featured announcements by our friends from the GLSPS of three new finds. New finds are rare on Lake Superior due to the size, depth and scarcity of wrecks. However, the big news appears to be the discovery of the long lost steamer Benjamin Noble. After decades of searches, she appears to have been found. The group showed footage of what appears to be her remains in deep water. The identification is tentative, but the likelihood of another steel vessel of her size and configuration lying on the bottom of western Lake Superior is dubious at best. The wreck is almost certainly that of the Noble. The group also announced the likely discovery of the well-known schooner Moonlight. Her identification is also tentative. The remains are badly broken and appear to show a cargo of iron ore scattered about her hull. The third wreck, the Thomas Friant, lies in just over 300 feet of water. The Gales show this year featured excellent footage of GLSPS divers penetrating the wreck at 300 ft. using rebreathers. The video footage was astounding and the interior of the wreck was shown in great detail. Congratulations to Ken Merryman, Jerry Eliason, Randy Beebe, Craig Smith and the rest of the GLSPS folks who located, dived and filmed these incredible wrecks!
