John, Yes, this is a hull mounted type unit, and you are correct that thermoclines can affect its performance. And you are also correct in that John Steele, and many others used this kind of sonar. It does not draw nice pictures, it just gives back echoes in both a CRT screen as well as a speaker. This is low-tech by today's standards, but most of the wrecks currently located were found with this type of set. Wesmar and others still make scanning sonars. The earlier model of Wesmar's scanning sonar was a 110, and this was not a very good unit. This one is a later model (150) and uses an 8 inch dome (where the transducer is housed). You don't need to cut a big hole in the bottom of your boat, I have it rigged on a tube that hangs off the back of the boat. Just ask an old-timer, they will tell you that back in the day a scanning sonar was a much coveted device !
