The Straits of Mackinac Underwater Preserve Association (formerly "Committee") has issued a handbook titled "Diving the Straits of Mackinac; 2004 Field Guide" in a limited edition for its members. The cost of membership is $25 and all the proceeds except the cost of reproduction go toward the cost of buoying the ships in the Straits. The guidebook runs over 100 pages and includes information collected from the Milwaukee Public Library, Bowling Green State University Library, contemporary news sources and most popular secondary sources and other collections. Numerous photos and drawings of the ships and their sisters are included. Among them is a circa 1966 diagram of the Minneapolis made shortly after its discovery and a remarkable photo of the Joseph Hurd missing its bow after it collided with the Cayuga. This is part of a continuing project by the Association to bring this information together in a single source for the diving community. Copies can be obtained from the Association Preseident, Larry Sanders, 12424 Sleeper St., Grand Haven, MI 49417 or the St. Ignace, Michigan Chamber of Commerce.
