Dave, One of West Michigans best kept secrets lies in the bottom of Spring Lake. The MANISTEE. She was being rebuilt in Ferrysburg, at Johnston Boiler Company, when she caught fire. Her new paint fed the flames. In an effort to save the dock, the MANISTEE's lines where cut with axes and she drifted NE about a quarter mile. She grounded at Savadge point and burned until she sank. This happened June 28, 1914. Today, her remains lie in about 25' of water. Her bow comes within a few feet of the surface. We have been too busy to dive her, but we will make an attempt this Spring. Vis. will more than likely be 2' or less. If anyone would like a picture of the MANISTEE, email me at rtr@iserv.net Hopefully we will have info at www.michiganshipwrecks.org in the near future.
