This Thursday, 1/15/2004, at 8PM Central we will be hosting a live chat on the passenger steamer Alpena, lost in the big storm of 1880 on Lake Michigan. Basic info on her follows:

[all] Carrying : passengers Detail : Overtaken by a storm & went missing. Last seen off Racine, WI. First indication that she was lost was when masses of wreckage began washing ashore along the coast near Manistee. It took several days for the magnitude of the disaster to be realized. Her paddlebox nameboard washed ashore at "Alpena Beach" in 1909, after a storm.
