Great Lakes historians and those who seek "ships gone missing" will gather in Holland, Michigan on Saturday, March 6 for the 3rd annual "Evening Beneath The Inland Seas" event sponsored by the Southwest Michigan Underwater Preserve Committee.
The proceeds from this year's fundraiser will benefit "Shipwreck Quest '99" an organized effort to locate shipwrecks within the borders of the proposed Southwest Michigan Underwater Preserve.
Doors will open at 6:30 PM in the City Council chambers of Holland City Hall where visitors will be treated to five separate multi-media presentations.
They include:
"Final Port of Call" - an award winning program which will set the scene for the evening by helping attendees understand the impact of Great lakes maritime disasters.
"The Lady Elgin - A Tale of Tragedy and Intrigue" - chronicling the loss of 300 people just prior to the civil war.
"A lady of Service, A Lady of Pleasure -The Rotarian" - the story of a restaurant vessel docked at Chicago during prohibition, and…
"The Verano - A Reflection of Changing Times" - the debut of the SWMUP committee's newest program. Learn how the 1995 discovery of this shipwreck opened a window into the past and revealed a mysterious set of circumstances not solved since the 1949 sinking.
"Underwater Images" - a video collage of underwater sites in Lake Michigan.
The program runs from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM and coffee and dessert will be served during the intermission. The cost is $10.00 at the door.
Raffle tickets will also be sold. Prizes include SCUBA equipment, gift certificates and books.
