Ken,

The Poverty Island Treasure has been the subject of much speculation and conjecture. The story centers around a confederate gold shipment that was allegedly dumped overboard during the Civil War era to avoid being seized by Union authorities. Personally, I find the story very hard to believe from an historical standpoint. The treasure story gave rise to the recent dispute over the remains of the wreck of the Captain Lawrence. You will find the most complete, accurate and realistic investigation of the legend and its origins in P.J. Creviere's new book "Wild Gales and Tattered Sails." It can be purchased online at http://www.execpc.com/~bbaillod/books.html and is reasonably priced and well worth having as it lists over 400 northern Lake Michigan wrecks.

: I was recently reading an account about a lost shipment of gold off poverty island in Lake Michigan which seemed like just another tall tale until it mentioned that a relatively major search effort was made in 1994. I was wondering if there is any validity to this lost gold story????
