Bob,
There are not any "good" wrecks in shallow water out of Port Austin but there are some shallow sites. Check out a large wooden stock ships anchor at (30904.4 49172.2 13' water) or a sunken island just outside the reef(30908.4 49175.1 12' to 25') What is in shallow water is broken and scattered. THe real interesting stuff out there is geological in nature. For example, along the edge of the Port Austin reef there is a wall that extends for many hundreds of feet; this is an excellent shallow water dive as you will find many fish and scattered debris from over a hundred years of vessels grounding on the reef.
An even more interesting formation lies 5 miles outside of Port Austoin and is referred to by the locals as the "dump grounds" (30904.2 49139.8) because it is where the corps of engineers dumped the stone from the harbor. The depth on the dump grounds ranges from 45 to 80 ft and at one point there is a natural rock face that exceeds 20 ft. I have personaaly found this site to be the best place in the Great Lakes to pick up expensive, used fishing gear.
: I am trying to find a way to navigate from Port Austin harbor to some shallow wreck found on the light house reef or other in the thumb area underwater preserve. Also description and depth information. Please Help.
