: We are producing a one hour television documentary for the Discovery Channel on shipwrecks of the Great Lakes. It is early in our research stage but we are looking at including 5 to 6 stories within the one hour. At least one story will be about the recent (or even ongoing) search and discovery for a wreck. The basic criterion for the other stories is simply a fascinating tale.

The first large sailing vessel on, and the first shipwreck in the Great Lakes was the Griffon(sp?). The vessel was disassembled by Lasalle in the 1600s and carried overland to the area of Buffalo New York where it was rebuilt in Lake Erie. Lasalle and his explorers sailed as far as Green Bay Wisconsin where they loaded the boat with furs purchased from the local indians. Lasalle continued on by canoe down the Mississippi while the Griffon set sail for Buffalo where it was to be re-supplied. It never arrived.

I'm not knowledgeable regarding the other lakes, but you might want to check our Lake Erie shipwreck web site at "http://www.alcheminc.com". Vessels of particular interest in that lake are the Conductor, the Marquette & Bessemer #2, the Erie, the Atlantic, and the Griffith.

I believe a fellow named Gary Kozak of Erie PA has located about 20 wrecks. Current searchers include the Wachters who publish Erie Wrecks. We link to their site from ours.
