Actually, the H. C. Akeley was fitted out with a salvaged engine and 2 boilers from the "Gen. Halbert Paine", a vessel which struck a submerged crib or sandbar and sank just off Grand Haven in 1879.

It would make sense that they used locally-produced gauges and other fittings to re-install the engine and boilers in 1880, prior to the Akeley's launching in the spring of 1881.We're putting a lot of research into this ship and will be telling her story while continuing the quest for the Chicora in 2003.
