In response to Steve's statement below, I must caution that although many GPS units can perform the mathematical conversion to and from LORAN, the converted numbers will have a nonstandard error, regardless of the quality of the unit used to do the conversion. This is because LORAN TDs do not have a consistent mathematical correspondence to LAT/LON at all points on a grid. TDs vary depending on the land masses that the LORAN radio signal must cross to reach your receiver. Because this varies, particularly around the Lakes, it is impossible to perform a conversion with reasonable accuracy. In essence, this means that the TD grids that used to be overlayed on some NOAA charts are actually theoretical grids. In fact, if these grids could be represented accurately, the lines would show nonstandard warping that would be a function of the height and width of land masses between the LORAN transmitter and line on the grid. This is called propagation error. It is relatively minor for large scale mapping purposes, but becomes VERY significant when you are trying to find wrecks. When trying to locate LORAN TDs with a GPS unit that shows readings in "TDs", I've found the error to be anywhere from a few hundred yards to as much as 2 miles.

So, a GPS will put you in the area of a wreck that you have TDs for, but in the Great Lakes, it will almost NEVER put you right on it and will usually put you quite a distance away.

: : Is there a way to translate Loran coordinates to GPS? I thought you knew!

: YES - THERE IS.
: The computer runs on 12VDC/ 200 ma
: and costs about @2,200.00 original
: I have two units.
: they are "fail safe", and never missed

: AQUIZITION time is less than two minutes

: Today they sell from about 700 to 800.
: I will sell this one, in nearly perfect
: condition, with a small library of

: GPS to LORAN-C and back to GPS, as many
