This may be a little early, but on February 28th in Chicago, there will be an event called the Chicago Maritime Festival to be held at the Chicago Historical Society. It is organized by the Chicago Maritime Society, the Chicago Historical Society and Common Times Magazine, and this will be its second year. Unlike the shipwreck-oriented events around the Great Lakes, they incorporate everything maritime-related, including lectures about shipping, ship-building, ship-art, law, weather and music, to name a few. In conjunction with the event there are week-long school outreach programs. The Festival is looking for volunteers, in addition to presenters. It is a young organization, a new concept in Chicago and worthy of your support. You might want to check out their web site at www.chicagomaritimefestival.org.
