Dave,

I have a great deal of information on the various builders of 19th century Great Lakes vessels, but very little has been written about the actual construction techniques employed in the vessels. There is considerably more info about the construction of wooden ocean vessels, much of which had been applied (sometimes incorrectly) to Great Lakes builds. That said, some plans for Great Lakes schooners and steamers remain, mostly at Dossin and HCGL, but nearly all of these are are very late 19th century. Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc has an excellent cross sectional display of a typical Great Lakes schooner design and they have some of William Bates' designs.

There are also some interesting reference books, such as Art Amos' comparative study of rudders of Great Lakes vessels. You might ask Pat Labadie over at Thunder Bay about additional materials. Pat has a great deal of knowledge on this subject, mostly from having examined an extremely large number of 19th century Great Lakes vessel remains. Many underwater archeologists in our region have also done studies of the construction techniques employed in specific vessels.

Hope that helps.

BB

: Does anyone no of any sites which might contain imformation on the history, including names of some of the leading builders, their methods, maybe even plans for building 19th Century Great Lakes Ships?
: thanks for any help,
: Dave
