The wealth of knowledge in this field lies in the many historical societies, research libraries, museums and archives located throughout the Great Lakes region. There are also several good "standard" reference books (some from the period and some more contemporary) that detail the works of the both the prominent and lesser known builders. There is a ton of information out there, it really depends on where you want to start.
