You could make an argument that these artifacts were taken before the law was passed and consequently are fair game. However, the laws were passed because the cultural history of many small lakeshore communities was quickly disappearing into basements and landfills around the Lakes. As such, just because you can sell the artifacts doesn't mean you should. It sets a bad example and I think it's generally tacky and in poor taste, especially for the few bucks these things generate. It would be better to donate them to a museum for a tax deduction than to see them once again disappear into a basement, never to be seen again.
