Well put. Technology has made it possible, and maybe even practicle, for us to see the lake bottom. Computer weather simulations, and even better vis. because of zebras has brought us to the threshold of solving some of the major mysteries of the Eastern shores of Lake Michigan.
Whether it be Chuck Larson, a Holland businessman who has invested a lot of time and money in sidescan equipment and searching, or Dave Trotter and Jeff Moore from the URA, www.shipwreck1.com
who share invaluable knowledge and search techniques, and help us search the lake bottem every Spring, or anybody who has ever experienced a MSRA presentation and supported the group with donations, purchases, admissions, or idea sharing, none of us can do it alone.
Let's face it, most of us have a tendancy to get "compartmentalized" in certain groups, you know, divers, historians, researchers, searchers. A few have been able to plant their feet in multiple groups. But I believe the success of discovery depends on everybody putting their heads together and working together.
Again, none of us can do this alone, otherwise we would have already!

: I was thrilled to hear that the Michigan Shipwreck Research group "stumbled" across the wreck of the HC AKELEY while dragging the depths for the CHICORA!
: To me, this validates my belief that the Great Lakes hold more mysteries than could EVER be published.
: More importantly, though, it is SO REFRESHING to see that the roster of those involved in this discovery DOESN'T include the usual experts; those "select few" whose authoring of a book or two 10+ years ago somehow qualifies them as the last word in Great Lakes history.
: Don't get me wrong! I own such books, and enjoy them to this day! I certainly don't mean to impune the work of their respective authors nor do I wish to convey disrespect.
: I only HOPE that the research being done into these freshwater oceans continues; it is ONLY through the efforts of those whose desire to constantly know more, to never stop asking WHY, to acknowledge the work of those who have gone before BUT NEVER STOP QUESTIONING the truth can the vast history of these lakes begin to unfold. Indeed, webpages such as this exemplify the BEST of this quest to understand.
: My best wishes to all of you- but PLEASE keep an OPEN MIND!
