: : Your right, this is interesting. I'm unclear whether the URA is selling these, or somebody else is trying to turn a buck on the hard work of the URA.
: : If Dave's group is selling them, more power to them. It seems like a bargain to me, and they deserve every penny they get.
: : If its somebody who ripped off the coordinates from Dave, I can't see supporting that kind of behavour. Buying them would be like buying a stolen radio. Not good.
: : Do we know who is selling these?

: : Ross Richardson

: : : This is a most interesting development! The coordinates for a few URA discovered Lake Huron wrecks are for sale on ebay. The numbers are for the John A. McPhail and James W. Curran, carferries lost in 1964 off Pt. Aux Barques. They are deep, tech dives. Bidding is opening at $100. This will be an interesting study in market demand for new tech diving targets and the relative value of wreck location info. The winner will have a private tech diving playground and will probably take great care with the location info., having paid to get it. However, one wonders how long the cat can stay in the bag once the word is out.
: I thought Stan Stock found those wrecks...

You are correct. I did find the Curran and the McPhail in 1986. In 1987 I invited John Steele to come out with me and shoot film while I shot stills. If someone from URA rediscovered them as they claim to have done without any documentation to prove it, that's great. But what gives someone else the right to sell numbers for wrecks I found? About three years ago a friend and I rediscovered the Florida, a wreck that Ed Ellison found. Have we dove it? Yes, most certainly. Did we find it necessary to put out some kind of annoucement/article to pat ourselves on the back? No. Would I ever dream of selling the numbers to a wreck that someone else found? No. Dave Trotter contacted me after he found out that I discovered the ferrys and asked me what my intentions were. I told him at that time I hadn't decided, and have never released the numbers to anyone. Incidentally, another couple rediscovered them in 1999. They are Pam and Chris Roth of Sterling Heights. Their group, Maritime Technologies, filmed the wrecks at that time as well. I have still pictures they shot. It's nice to see that all the artifacts are still there from the time I shot them back in 1987. I went to the e-bay site, and if I read it correctly it sure sounds as if it's someone from URA that was trying to sell the coordinates. I found it interesting that they mentioned they NEVER ACTUALLY DOVE the site, but could guarantee the numbers.....hmmm. I've got some swamp land in Florida you may be interested in as well. Perhaps the reason there were no bids on the numbers was because anyone with any searching capabilities at all could go out and find them just like I did, and just like the Roths did without paying anything to anyone, and having the satisfaction of the thrill of the hunt as well. Besides, how many Great Lakes divers are actually scanning e-bay for shipwreck locations? Doesn't Dave Trotter live in Caro? I believe that's where the seller's origin was listed on e-bay.....
Thanks,
Stan Stock
