C-C-C-Cold Water Diving Program at the Maritime Museum

SOUTH HAVEN--A “Deep Diving in the Great Lakes” program will be offered on Sunday, December 8 at the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven. The program will cover the planning, equipment and execution of one of the deepest, coldest, darkest, and possibly one of the most difficult dives in Lake Michigan.

Presenters include four of the team of divers who went down to research the shipwreck thought to be the Chicora. All are members of the South West Michigan Underwater Preserve Committee that searched for the wreck for several years. When the shipwreck was discovered, Paul Kuiper, senior vice president with Robert W. Baird in Holland, led the team through the pre-dive planning sessions. “Our team did training dives all winter, in the icy, cold waters of local lakes and Lake Michigan. We held pre-dive meetings planning the dive, discussing the pros and cons of the dive plan, and planning for all contingents.” In addition, “we planned for all the ‘just in case’ scenarios that made us very prepared for this type of dive,” stated Kuiper.

Divers Jeff Vos, Peggy Kurpinski, and Todd VanderArk will help Kuiper describe the history of the search for the Chicora, the diving equipment and safety measures employed and the results of the dive. Post-dive discussions involved determining that the vessel was not the Chicora, but in all probability, the H.C. Akeley. The Akeley was built in 1881 in Grand Haven, Michigan and went down 15 miles off of Holland on November 13, 1883, with six people on board. All hands were lost.

Kuiper, Vos, Kurpinski, and VanderArk have many diving certifications and hundreds of hours of dives in a variety of environments. Diving equipment will be displayed, as well as photos of the site and the ship.

This free program will be held on Sunday, December 8 at 2:00 pm in the Padnos Boat Shed on the Michigan Maritime Museum campus. The Museum is located at 260 Dyckman Avenue, at the bridge in South Haven.
