Ross,

The approach used by most agencies is to notify tht State Police anytime possible human remains are found, regardless of age or location. This solution covers all the bases and takes the responsibilty off the diver or organization. If the wreck is shallow enough, the police can do the identification. If not, the police can give you permission to remove the bone or bones.

Whether the remains are associated with the historic wreck or are those of an unfortunate diver or were sunk there as the result of foul play is up to the investigators to decide.

: I have a "hypothetical" question. Lets say there is a diver diving an obscure, little explored wreck. Under some debris(mast, logs), he(or she) finds what appears to be a very old bone, possibly a hip bone. There is no way to verify it is human, could be anything, including human. Any ideas on how to identify this bone without removing it? Or any authorities that should be notified? Hypothetically of course.
