Mike's definition is well put and is shorter than my description of technical diving and more accurate than DAN's.

: Personally, I define a technical dive as being a dive in which a ceiling is a planned part of the dive; where a ceiling is defined as the inability to ascend directly to the surface as the result of a planned staged deco obligation or significant penetration diving.

: : DAN's definition of technical dive:

: : 1. Depth greater than 130 ft.

: : 2. Breathing mix other than compressed air.

: : 3. Overhead environment (cave, wreck, deco).

: : 4. Special training or equipment used.
