The Menekaunee is a pretty well documented wreck. I've attached the basics on her. Her's is a sad story because much of her remains were cut up to make shipwreck furniture both before and after the laws protecting wrecks were passed. Today, there's not much left of her. A place called Shipwreck Originals, owned by Jim Clous claimed to have the legal right to salvage her and made furniture out of her. I'm not sure if he is still in business, because his website, shipwreckoriginals.com is down. Even if he did salvage the wreck before the laws, it sets a bad example and creates the impression that it's OK to destroy historic shipwreck remains for personal gain and private collectors.

Detail: She broke away from tow of the steamer MANISTIQUE off the Manitous and was driven ashore near Frankfort after a long fight against the elements. Frankfort Lifesaving Service struggled to get their apparatus to the beach but were too late and arrived to find the a mass of lumber, gear and bodies on the beach, being protected by the ship's dog which died soon after. Owned by Loud & Co. of Oscoda.

: I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find some information about the schooner-barge Menekaunee. Which wrecked on Nov. 19th 1886 near Point Betsie, Mi. Thanks.
