Magnetometer in the straits

I am building a magnetometer for use right here in the straits of mackinac. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas, hints, tricks or even if anyone has used one and would like to share with me how well it worked, or perhaps not worked... Its almost done and hopefully I'll be able to get some use out of it this summer.
