: I doubt very much that we'll see another large vessel go down on the lakes again. The advances in technology and the precautions the companies now take make another serious vessel loss much less likely. None of the accidents you mention would probably happen today. I think we'll still see some fires, strandings and minor collisions but I suspect the Lakes have seen their last laker founder with loss of life.

: : Through the years we have seen and heard about alot of Ships that have sank in the Great Lakes due to Thick Patchy Fog like the Cedarville or Rocky Reefes like the William C. Moreland or like many ships Fierce Gales on the Great Lakes like the storm of 1913 that took the James C. Carruthers down and to this day has not been found. Or Gales that took the
: : Daniel J. Morrell,Carl D. Bradlley, or the mother of all Great Lakes Shipwrecks the Edmund Fitzgerald. My question is and I don't expect any of you to answer this and I hope it never happens but I think it will again is when will another Great Lakes Freighter sink due to fog, reefs, and gales and storms. How big of a disaster will it be? Will it be as big as the Fitz and will it be deeper in the water than the Fitz will be. When will a ship sink that can top the Fitzgerald in length. I hope it never happens but I'm almost sure it will. Will the Shipping industry be ready or will it be destined to happen. A question for alot of people to answer espically Mother Nature. Oh hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea.

I must agree that advances in technology and precautions would keep a freighter safe on the Great Lakes, but I also belive that another freighter will sink do to a storm or fog because of human error. There is alot of money to be made in the shipping industry and I think with greedy people in this world that some owners of the ships may risk one more late season run. And that may be the time a fierce gale may kick up on the Great Lakes and take another freighter. I think we will see another freighter go down that will be bigger in length than the Fitzgerald. Maybe even a thousand footer, maybe not. Like I say I hope this never happens again and if it does no lives will be taken because of this. Technology and Radar is always good but you never know when it can malfunction, and take another Great Lakes Vessel. If this does happen it will be one more wreck for divers to go and explore and that is what shipwreck researching is all about. Oh hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea.
