I have used a hand held GPS for about seven years. I always purchased one that would allow LORAN coordinates in the set up. Because LORAN is a land based system, errors do exist in the signal ( power plants, towers, etc.) The difference between LORAN and GPS was usually less than 1/2 mile. It is possible to get closer by determining what the error is in the area you are looking by marking a known wreck. Example, I would add .1 to the second TD number when using LORAN coordinats in the GPS at Whitefish point. Most of the wrecks today have been marked with the GPS. Unlike the bad old days of LORAN, the GPS seems to be really consistant between different make and models. Now that the government has turned off the dithering it is possible to use the GPS to drive right up to a wreck. No more lining up the big tree on shore with the end of the breakwater, and checking the flasher to see if your depth is correct.
