Dave, You will find many different opinions on "who's good and who isn't". First I would start with visiting local dive shops. PADI, NAUI, YMCA, etc.. all have good courses. It really comes down to the instructor(s), staff and you. If you find them to be friendly, informative and SAFTEY conscious, its a good start. Watch out for the, I been do'in forever and can "teach" anybody. I am sure they can but, not in the classroom environment you will be in. I myself have had to do several one on ones to turn poor students into good divers. Its a sport anyone can learn, given desire and the "instructor's ability".
