: Thanks for the great info on the Lady Elgin. I noticed a problem with the coordinates you listed however.

: You give the location as LAT/LON 42.13'41" / 87.43'89".

: Please note that there are 60 minutes and 60 seconds, so the value of 89 seconds makes no sense. You probably meant 87 degrees, 43.89 minutes as is seen on GPS devices. To get seconds multiply .89 x 60 giving 53.4, so the correct value must be 87 degrees, 43 minutes 53.4 seconds.

To Mr. Laing:
I would also like to send you a web page from the Shipwreck Forum which includes more inspiring, interesting, and informative information which I have obtained on the two wonderful and brave heroes of the Lady Elgin Disaster, Edward Spenser and her captain Jack Wilson which is www.baillod.com/messages/1149.html I hope you will find my series of articles based on Great lakes several books about the these two brave young men to be good reading. Incidentally, according to Pete Caesar in his book, "The Lady Elgin Is Down" (1981) today's date, June 16, Captain Jack Wilson was born in Ogdensburg, New York in the year 1822, which made him only 38 years old, and still a young adult when he made the untimate sacrifice of his own life in his effort to save his passengers, though many of them were lost with him.
Sincerely, Mary Saleh.
