I've dived the Sagamore. In fact, it's my favourite wreck.

It's in the shipping lane, about 1/6 the way across (the lane is 3 miles at that point). Access is by boat, as the site is 2 miles of the Gros Cap point in Canada. There is a small marina near Gros Cap on the Canadian side, and it's about a 15 minute ride to the site. The dive is timed best if you put your craft in the water around 1/2 hour after dawn, so the lake is still relatively calm by the end of everyone's second dive.

As has been noted, because you're in the shipping lane, you should have a radio on board, and contact Soo Traffic to let them know when you get there and when you leave. Soo Traffic warns the freighters around you. Keep somone topside to monitor the radio.

Last summer the Sagamore was in 65' water, with 40' vis at depth. The current on each of my dives was extremely light, and runs perpendicular to the wreck.

The wreck is 308' long, with about the forward 200' in good condition, easily penetrable as some of the hatches are missing. Lots of light, and a great wreck!

Another interesting note is that this summer is the 100th anniversary of the Sagamore's sinking... July 29th, a Sunday, several of the local divers are intending to do this dive.

The guy who used to do the charters closed his business something like four or five years ago, but will still jump at the chance to catch a ride out there.

Have a great dive!
