Well Chris, there is diving instruction available through Capt. Bill's Upper River Diving Adventures on Buffalo Ave. in Niagara Falls. Meanwhile however, the waters surrounding Fort Niagara are within a restricted zone. The area belongs to the State of New York. It is necessary to obtain a permit from NYS Parks, Western Region. The penalties for violations are stiff, including fine & jail, and have been actively inforced. However, there is a fair chance that underwater archaeology will be reintroduced via the Old Fort Niagara Assoc. in the near future. A survey was made in the past of the bottom from Youngstown to eastern end of Fort Niagara State Park, and the results were poor. Living in Olcott, you should have an idea of the progression of erosion on the south shore of Lake Ontario. At the Fort, about 250 feet have been washed away since the 1720's, and the incredible wave action tumbles 5' boulders back and forth over the near shore. So, I suppose if you want to build a coffer-dam and mine for artifacts, you would have a better chance of finding something than waving a hand over the silt.

: This is very interesting site , I don't dive but this is making me want to where can you be trained properly in the buffalo ny area. i live near near olcott ny i was wondering if any good wrecks are around here or youngstown also . has anyone ever dived the outside of fort niagara and taken video footage that would be very interesting to see and hear of some of the past. this is a very interesting place i will continue to check it often thanks for people doing what you do all be careful.. chrisvc
