: The Northern Indiana caught fire on July the 17th on a calm day with light winds. The accident took the lives of 28 people out of a total of 104 passengers and 43 grew. The date and the account fits the story told by my wife's family about her ancestors journey to Michigan from Germany. Does any one know a resource that I may find a list of the survivers or are there newspaper accounts of the accident? Thak you, Bill

I finally had a chance to travel downtown to do a library search on the Northern Indiana. The Cleveland Herald of July 18th and 19th 1856 has a detailed account of the wreck and provides a fairly complete list of the passengers. If you can provide me with a last name I'll let you know if it appears on the list. If so, I can fax or e-mail you a copy of the articles. It's a fascinating story. I've added a much condensed version to our web site at "http://www.alcheminc.com".
