: While fishing off Bronte many years ago, I remember seeing a shipwreck on my graph recorder. It was in about 150ft of water, and was somewhere off the Shell pier. I had heard tales of fishermen losing their downrigger hardware in the area at about 60ft, and this image did have a mast....in fact, the detail was striking. I was wondering if anybody had any information on this "fish story"?

I too am a diver from the Burlington area who enjoys reading about shipwrecks and the stories that surround them. There have been numerous losses in Western Lake Ontario but documentation appears to be scarce. The"Flora L Baines" and "P.W.D.114" were lost in this area but the former is a tug and the latter a works barge. They do'nt seem to match what you describe in your sonar image. The "Pinta", a stonehooker, was also lost off Oakville, but she is thought to lie off Clarkson 7or8 miles to the North-east. It might possibly be the "Northman", a 3-masted schooner lost in 1880. She founderd several miles offshore while trying to tack into the open lake with a partial load of grain. It is thought that while tacking the partial cargoe shifted making her unmanageable. The vessels cabin washed in to shore just east of Bronte with a body of a young crewmember wedged in one of the frames. All hands were lost. Good Luck with your search.
