It has been located outside the usual suspects.

There are several divers that have THE numbers. though they do not have the training to dive it but will not share the numbers either.

Rumor: One of the divers is a poseidon technician in the Chicago metro area. He wants to dive it and will relinquish the numbers only nobody want to dive with him to that depth b/c he lacks the skills, experience.

Rumor: The numbers will cost the sum of $10,000 from another party if you want them bad enough.

I have been researching this wreck for over 4 years, have an extensive file on it. I also know 2 long time wreckers that have done the same whose names I won't mention but they have photos and info from a son of one of the crewsman.

I have personally seen the sidescan sonar of the uboat.

The numbers that are published are wrong, two of my friends dove it.....rock piles, rock piles.

Rumor: The number holders wanted the museum of science and industry to raise it, preserve it and make it a sister ship exhibit to the sub in chicago but that idear was poo pooed so now they're holding out for the Discovery Channel.

I found it interesting that when I went to some libraries in Chicago and asked about the reference material on the uboat, the persons there seemed very suspicious, defensive and started asking me a lot of questions as to why I was asking and researching the uboat...... these persons always said the books were out. When I would go back when these persons were off duty, the books were there. Hmmm.

LEAD: A non-interested historian told me that the answer to the uboat's location is located somewhere in a new york publication regarding the uboat. That the people with the numbers found the location there themselves.

Rumor: A fisherman that currently docks in Burnham Harbor found the wreck and gave them to an recently infamous Chicago wrecker, tho he also does not have the training to dive it.

Hmmm. interesting.

....in the hopes that something breaks loose.

The actual depth is between 306 and 317 ffw.

: : : Does anyone know anything about a WWI submarine that
: : : was sunk intentionaly afte the war?
: : : I think it was sunk n Lake Micigan
: : : Thanks
: : :
: : You are refering to the UC-97, a type UCIII German mine laying submarine. She was never commisioned for active duty during WWI but was surrendered along with 175 other German U-Boats at the end of the war. The US brought 5 of these back to the States for technical study and to be used as war trophys for advertising the Victory Bond drive. As per terms of their surrender, all of these U-Boats were eventually destroyed. The UC-97 was stripped of all of its armaments as well as it's propulsion and navigational equipment and towed out into Lake Michigan by the U.S.S. Hawk. The UC-97 was then sunk by a barrage of shells fired from the U.S.S. Wilmette. (The U.S.S. Wilmette had been constructed from the hull of the ill fated passenger ship the Eastland.)
: : The wreckage of the UC-97 was located in '92 by A&T Recovery but it's location has not been made public. The Navy's records indicate that the location of it's sinking was 42 deg. 10' N, 87 deg. 20' W, which is about 20 miles east of Highland Park, IL. However, if this was very accurate, then it wouldn't have taken A&T as long to locate it as it did. The video of the UC-97 that A&T has made public, indicates that it is approximately 250' deep. Other searches for the wreckage have been ongoing, but I am not aware of anyone else locating her.
