: My uncle died in a shipwreck in July of 1936. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
: We believe it was a Material Services Barge.

The Material Service Barge sank on July 29, 1936. 11 of her 22 crewmen were able to get off the MSB before she sank, but only 7 survived. The 15 who drowned were: Capt. Charles D. Brown, Port Huron Michigan; Mate Melvin Tufts, Lockport, Illinois; Chief Engineer Odin Johnson, Lemont Illinois; Wheelman John Melby, Chicago IL; Deckhand Fred Samuelson, Chicago IL, Deckhand Elmer Bergren, Chicago IL; Deckhand C. Brown, Michigan; Cook Tony Casity, Lockport IL, Cook Joe Oberlin, Lockport IL; Deckhand "Mickey" (otherwise unidentified); Boom Man Elmer Bergland, Lockport IL; Scrapper Leif Olson, Lockport IL; Oiler Charles Bergstead, Chicago IL; Oiler Dan Hanson, Sturgeon Bay WI; Oiler Harry Meyers, Lockport IL.

If your uncle is among these, I can send you more details about what happened the night he died. I have visited this wreck site many times and I have quite a substantial file on her.
