The 1850 burning of the steamer G.P. Griffith off the Willowick lake shore remains the worst Lake Erie disater, and the third worst maritime tragedy on the Great Lakes. June 17th marks the 150th anniversary of this event, which prompted passage of the first safety legislation governing lake boats.
A historical marker with an account of the G.P. Griffith will be unveiled and dedicated at 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 2nd, near the disaster site - Lake Metroparks Lakefront Lodge Park, 30525 Lakeshore Blvd, Willowick. The public is invited to attend. Lake Metroparks Board Of Park Commissioners along with the City of Willowick, and the Lake and Ohio Historical Societies will host the free event.
