I live about 30 miles from the wreck. I've just never had the opportunity to dive it. It is in the shipping channel, I believe in the Northern part of the channel. The channel is like 3 miles wide there.
It is not buoyed, so you have to grapple it. It's a good idea to call the coast guard to let them know when you'll be there and they're suppose to redirect the traffic. You may also want to contact the lock master via marine radio. The wreck is on the opposite side of the bay northwest of Brimley maybe eight miles (??). Not sure how far that is from the point, but pretty far (10+ miles??).
I know a lot of guys who have dove it. The freighters don't like to move much and sometimes they get closer than you'd like. I've dove in the St. Mary's, you'll here them coming and think they right over you. Make sure you have a radio on board and someone up top at all times. If you don't see any freighters coming, you'll have a lot time before they'll be there, but I'd still keep someone up top in case you lose the grapple.
I hear it's an excellant dive with good visibility, no current, lots of whitefish, but the waves can be rough and the fog unpredictable, so have a good weather report. The depth is around 60' max, the deck at 35'. I guess you can penetrate the entire length of the wreck (just a big tube).
I'm not too sure where to put a boat in. I don't think Brimley has a good ramp yet (I could be wrong). There's a good ramp west of the locks in the Soo off Portage St (I believe). From there it's about an hour to the wreck. There's a ramp in Canada that is very close to the wreck, but I've never been there.
If you need more info, let me know and I'll give you some numbers.
